Ocoee police crack down on drunken drivers for holiday weekend | www.wftv.com

18, 2014. (Associated Press) more > By Ben Wolfgang - The Washington Times - Saturday, August 30, 2014 Democrats push to raise the nations minimum wage has taken a backseat recently to crises in the Middle East and elsewhere, but President Obama on Saturday resumed the effort and accused Republicans of not caring about the standard of living of average Americans. In his weekly address, Mr. Obama used the upcoming Labor Day holiday as another way to raise the issue of the minimum wage, which the White House wants to increase from $7.25 to $10.10. The wage has become a centerpiece of the administrations so-called opportunity agenda and also is a key talking point for Democrats on the campaign trail. Raising the minimum wage would be one of the best ways to give a boost to working families. It would help around 28 million Americans from all walks of life pay the bills, provide for their kids, and spend that money at local businesses.

(Associated Press) Well get them out of the car and the officer will then take their car and park it on the side of the road, and theyll be escorted over here to do the field sobriety test, said Lt. Brad Dreasher with the Ocoee Police Department. But officers have strict guidelines they have to follow in order to make any DUI arrest legal, including reading a specific script. If they go off script it could actually cause a problem for all the cases, Dreasher said. The Ocala Police Department ran into a problem earlier this year when a judge tossed out a DUI case, and possibly many more to come, because the officers didnt have required blue flashing lights. Drivers must also be given notice a minimum of a half mile before the checkpoint so they have the option to turn around. But if a driver makes that choice, they arent necessarily in the clear.

(credit: CBS) We understand that, we understand a lot of people are going to be traveling, said Colorado State Trooper Josh Lewis. Expect to see a lot more police and troopers on the roadways. Between the Rocky Mountain Showdown, the Taste of Colorado and all the holiday weekend festivities, there are plenty of activities to enjoy. (credit: CBS) We want people to enjoy them, celebrate and have fun. But ultimately do so responsibly. If youre going to be celebrating, if youre going to be partaking in anything that might impair your judgement, make sure you have a plan ahead of time, said Lewis. Whether its marijuana, alcohol or any other prescription drug use, said Lewis.
